Background of the study
Extended family systems have traditionally played a central role in providing care for the elderly, particularly in communities where formal healthcare services may be limited. In Ika South Local Government Area, Delta State, the extended family system is integral to ensuring that elderly members receive both emotional and physical support. This care model often fills gaps left by formal healthcare institutions, as family members provide assistance with daily activities, medication management, and emotional support (Nwosu, 2023). Recent studies underscore the positive impact of strong familial bonds on elderly well-being and overall quality of life (Amadi, 2024). However, modern socio-economic pressures, urbanization, and changing family dynamics are challenging the sustainability of these traditional care models (Chinonso, 2025). This study investigates how extended family systems influence elderly care, exploring both the benefits and the challenges posed by evolving social structures.
Statement of the problem
Despite the longstanding role of extended family systems in elderly care, shifts in socio-economic conditions and urban migration are weakening these traditional support networks in Ika South. As a result, many elderly individuals face reduced care and support, leading to compromised health outcomes. The erosion of extended family care necessitates an evaluation of current practices and the identification of sustainable alternatives to ensure adequate elderly care (Nwosu, 2023; Chinonso, 2025).
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate the role of extended family systems in elderly care.
To identify challenges affecting the sustainability of traditional care models.
To recommend strategies for improving elderly care support.
Research questions:
How do extended family systems contribute to elderly care in Ika South?
What challenges are associated with maintaining traditional elderly care practices?
What interventions can sustain and enhance elderly care within extended families?
Research Hypotheses:
Strong extended family ties positively influence elderly health outcomes.
Socio-economic changes adversely affect traditional family care systems.
Community-based interventions can complement extended family care for the elderly.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of extended family systems on elderly care, providing insights for policymakers and community leaders to develop supportive interventions. The goal is to ensure improved care for the elderly in Ika South (Nwosu, 2023; Amadi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is confined to evaluating the influence of extended family systems on elderly care in Ika South Local Government Area, focusing solely on local familial practices and elderly support mechanisms.
Definitions of terms:
Extended Family Systems: Family structures that include relatives beyond the nuclear family.
Elderly Care: The provision of support and services to older adults.
